People wanting to pick up friends or relatives from Sydney Airport's domestic terminal will have to park a couple of hundred metres further away or pay a $4 fee under an overhaul of the congested airport's parking.
The number of parking spots available for free pick-up at the airport will be significantly increased, and users will have an extra five minutes without having to pay.
But the free pick-up area will be moved further from the domestic terminal, and the section of the airport currently used for free pick-ups will attract a $4 toll for 15 minutes, levied via e-tag.
Car-share drivers using UberX or GoCar will be able to pick up customers from either the $4 pick-up zone or the new free pick-up zone.
The airport, which earned revenue of $127 million from parking last year, is moving the free pick-up zone to the P3 multi-storey parking lot.
This is about 180 metres further away than the current free pick-up zone, and about 500 metres from the terminals.
The move means that the number of free pick-up spaces will increase from 52 to 700, hopefully reducing congestion in the area.
"What we do know is that demand outstrips supply for the free pick-up area," said the general manager of parking and ground transport at Sydney Airport Corporation, Craig Norton.
Users will have also 15 minutes free parking at the P3 parking lot, an increase from the current 10. The cost of parking for 16-30 minutes is $8.
"This will lower the amount of recirculation that we sometimes see in the precinct," Mr Norton said.
The changes are due to start on Tuesday, July 19.
The airport will also allow one-hour free parking at its Blu Emu Car Park, which can be accessed via a free shuttle bus.
Uber recently dropped its "geo-fence" around Sydney Airport, which had blocked users from booking picks-ups from the terminals.
The taxi industry, meanwhile, says ride-share operators should be made to pay the $4 fee, to match the access fee paid by taxis.
