A FEMALE short-haired domestic cat has narrowly escaped a cruel end after it was found stuffed inside a chicken bag and left for dead on the banks of the Logan River off Cusack Lane.
Amanda Lyon said her sister, brother and father made the appalling discovery on May 11 after they stopped at the Payne Bridge on Cusack Lane to have a look at the water.
“My sister heard a cat crying and went to investigate,” Ms Lyon said.
“She found a tied up chicken feed bag lying in the water and when they opened it up, discovered the cat.”
How long she had been inside the bag and the identity of the person responsible for the heinous act is as yet unknown. An RSPCA cat handler said she was very lucky to have been found, as she would certainly not have survived if left tied in that bag for an extended period of time.
They took the little white tabby, who Ms Lyon said looked very glad to see them, to the Cusack Lane Veterinary Surgery, where the veterinary nurse tended to the animal overnight.
“She was skinny, had a few skin wounds and was covered in urine when she was brought in,” she said.
The surgery reported the incident to the RSPCA who received the animal on May 13. RSPCA spokesperson Michael Beatty said that because the cat was microchipped, they were able to identify and make contact with her owner who lives in Kingston.
“The owner said the cat is usually indoors however escaped through a bathroom window approximately a week ago,” he said.
“How the cat got from Kingston to Jimboomba is unknown at this stage. Any information from the public would be greatly appreciated.”
She was reunited with her owner late yesterday.
