Boxing trainer Lincoln Hudson has denied allegations that a disgraced union boss leaked to him contact details unlawfully obtained from the electoral roll in order to threaten a rival.
A former general secretary of the NSW branch of the Labor Party, Jamie Clements, has been suspended from the party following revelations that he is being prosecuted for leaking electoral roll details to the former National Union of Workers state secretary, Derrick Belan, who allegedly passed on the information to Mr Hudson.
The NSW Labor Party head office issued a short statement on Friday saying, "Officers of the NSW Branch of the Australian Labor Party met this morning and have resolved to suspend the party membership of Jamie Clements."
Mr Hudson said that, although he knew Mr Belan, the union figure had not leaked the address of Craig Wilson, who was understood to have an involvement with Mr Hudson's partner.
Instead, Mr Hudson told Fairfax Media that it was Mr Wilson who contacted him and left a message saying, "Hi Linc, give me a call, mate."
Mr Hudson, who runs the Ultimate Training Centre in St Marys in Sydney's west, said the misunderstanding with Mr Wilson had arisen when his partner paid a hospital visit with Mr Wilson to see Mr Wilson's ill mother.
He said his partner had known the Wilson family for 25 years.
Mr Hudson said that officers from the Electoral Commission had spoken to him at least four months ago and that he had provided them with a statement denying that Mr Belan had ever provided him with Mr Wilson's contact details.
"People have got their wires crossed. It is 100 per cent wrong," he told Fairfax Media.
"The problem is that innocent people get involved in election campaigns; it's not right, mate," he said.
Asked how he knew Mr Belan, Mr Hudson said that the pair had had "business dealings", which he did not wish to discuss.
Mr Belan endured a gruelling time in the witness box during the building royal commission over allegations he spent almost $40,000 of his union's funds on dating websites, a tattoo parlour, jewellery and a luxury cruise.
His actions have been referred to both NSW Police and the Fair Work Commission over alleged credit card fraud, and breaching his duties as a union officer.
In April, Mr Belan was fined $1500 for possession of cocaine and ice.
Mr Hudson suggested that the charges against Mr Clements, whom he has never met, was a "witch hunt".
Labor Party sources have told Fairfax Media that two of Mr Clements' staff members expressed their concerns to Labor Party officials about Mr Clements' alleged unauthorised use of Electoral Commission data.
According to the Electoral Commission's website, "Electoral rolls are not available for sale, and it is illegal to copy an electoral roll. Heavy penalties apply to any organisation or person who uses electoral enrolment information for a non-approved purpose."
Mr Clements, who was forced to resign this year over sexual harassment claims, has been served with a court attendance notice to appear at Sydney's Downing Centre Local Court on June 7 charged with two breaches of the Parliamentary Electorates and Elections Act.
The penalties attract fines of up to $22,000 for each matter.
Opposition Leader Bill Shorten deflected questions about whether the saga embroiling Mr Clements could damage Labor's campaign.
"It's a matter of record I have said some harsh things about Mr Clements in the past, but the matter is now before the courts and I'm going to let that take its course," Mr Shorten told reporters in Darwin.
