Improving bicycle access to the Sydney Harbour Bridge could be one of the projects bankrolled by a new $80 million cycling infrastructure fund.
Cyclists must currently push their bikes up several flights of steps to reach the main deck on the northern side of the harbour crossing.
The money, to be announced in Tuesday's NSW budget over four years, will from July 1 deliver priority projects identified by an assessment panel comprised of government, cycling and road user groups.
It will come out of the government's infrastructure fund, Restart NSW, which holds the proceeds of asset sales and windfall tax gains.
"We're seeing more and more people leave their cars at home and instead riding to where they need to be, whether that's work or to catch public transport, so we're making sure the infrastructure is in place to support that," said Transport Minister Andrew Constance.
"We've recently starting rolling out new Opal-activated bike sheds at selected train stations as well, and this money will go even further to make cycling a more attractive option."
Treasurer Gladys Berejiklian noted the money comes on top of $39 million announced in April for cycleways and walking upgrades across NSW.
That money will deliver 110 kilometres of on-road and off-road bicycle routes next financial year.
"We all know the health benefits of cycling and want to encourage people to get moving and lead an active lifestyle, that's why we're boosting investment in cycling infrastructure," she said.
A shared pedestrian and bicycle path between Sutherland and Cronulla, the Sutherland to Cronulla Active Transport Link, is being cited as the type of project that could be funded.
Ms Berejiklian will also announce on Tuesday a $3.4 billion surplus for the 2015-16 financial year.
