Star will draw the crowd

IT'S the game all Sydney soccer fans have been waiting for: it's the appearance of Alessandro Del Piero and it will be a sell-out.

It's Sydney FC versus Western Sydney Wanderers at Parramatta Stadium on Saturday night.

While Del Piero will attract the eyes, it's a chance for the Wanderers to attract serious notice in Football Australia's A League.

The Wanderers have started credibly enough: a nil-all opening draw with Central Coast Mariners and a 1-0 loss to Adelaide last Friday night.

The concern is they're yet to score a goal.

But that's not a worry for coach Tony Popovic.

"I have got faith in the players," he told AAP.

"If we keep creating chances and getting it in the right areas, I'm confident that will turn and the team will get the goals they deserve."

Popovic added he was heartened by Shinji Ono's performance and the best was yet to come from the Japanese star.

"It's a new country, a new culture and a new way of playing and he needs to adjust," he said.

"With match fitness — and once he gets to know his teammates and gets settled — he will only get better.

"It takes time for everyone, it's not just Ono.

"Some of these players have only been together for a month . . . Ono has just arrived.

"So it will take time to get those combinations right, as long as the ideas are there and the way we want to play is there.

"They are trying to play the way we want and will improve week by week."

Popovic said there should be excitement, not apprehension, about Saturday night.

"We're all looking forward to having that rivalry, which is important anywhere in the world," he said.

"As a player I always loved playing in derby games, and nothing beats that.

"And it is different — you think it's not but it is.

"Even the crowd is different: and the noise is different around the stadium."
