An office within the NSW Police headquarters in Parramatta has been sealed off after a letter with potentially dangerous residue on it was opened by a staff member.
Fire crews, paramedics and police were called to the Charles Street headquarters of the State Crime Command about 11.10am on Wednesday.
It's believed a State Crime Command employee opened a letter that caused her hand to tingle and go red.
A police spokesman said an office within the building had been isolated while Fire & Rescue's Hazmat team examines the item.
"A police operation is currently underway at a building in Parramatta," the spokesman said. "Just after 11.10am emergency services were called to an office in the building following reports that a letter containing a residue was received."
Police said investigations were continuing.
The Parramatta headquarters was the scene of a fatal shooting last year when police accountant Curtis Cheng was shot dead by radicalised school boy Farhad Jabar.
Mr Cheng was shot as he left work on Friday afternoon for the October long weekend.
