A toddler has been taken to hospital in a serious condition after he was pulled unconscious from a backyard swimming pool in Sydney's west on Wednesday, the latest victim in a string of water-related incidents this summer.
Police and paramedics were called to a house on June Street in Seven Hills about midday on Wednesday to reports that the boy, aged about three, had been found underwater.
A NSW Ambulance spokesman said paramedics were told the boy had been submerged "for a short period".
The boy was unresponsive when he was found in the pool and neighbours performed CPR on the child before emergency services arrived, a NSW Police spokeswoman said.
An above-ground swimming pool could be seen in the backyard of the single-storey house.
Paramedics treated the boy before taking him in an ambulance to The Children's Hospital at Westmead in a serious condition. The CareFlight rescue helicopter was also called to the scene.
Police will investigate how the boy managed to get into the pool.
The temperature in Blacktown was forecast to hit a top of 42 degrees on Wednesday, following a stiflingly hot night across the city.
The incident comes less than a week after a two-year-old boy, Henry Tran, died in hospital after he was found unconscious in a fishpond at a house in Fairfield West.
Henry was the fifth toddler to drown in NSW, while more than 20 people have died in water-related incidents in NSW, since mid-December, a toll the Royal Life Saving Society has described as "unprecedented".
