A maths teacher from a school on Sydney's north shore has been charged with sexually assaulting a student several times over the past three months.
Daniel James Gillen, 40, was arrested at his home in Toukley, on the Central Coast, at dawn on Thursday.
He started as a maths teacher at the co-educational school early last year, according to a school newsletter.
Police allege he befriended a 14-year-old student and sexually assaulted her on at least seven occasions between December and early this year.
He also allegedly touched her indecently.
The State Crime Command's Child Abuse Squad started investigating after it received a tip-off.
Mr Gillen has been charged with seven counts of aggravated sexual assault against a person under 16, six counts of aggravated indecent assault against a person under 16 and one count of committing an act of indecency.
He did not apply for bail in Wyong Local Court on Thursday and will reappear on April 18.
A spokesman for the Department of Education confirmed the teacher is not at school.
"Pending the outcome of the criminal proceedings the department will take appropriate action," he said.
"As this matter is before the court it is inappropriate for the department to provide further comment."
A police spokesman said the Child Abuse Squad "is comprised of detectives who are specially trained to investigate crimes against children, including sexual assault, physical abuse and serious cases of neglect".
