Travel for less than an hour north of Sydney and you will feel like you are a long way from the noise and crowds of the city.
The Central Coast offers a variety of escapes: beaches, lakes, national parks and lush hinterland.
Possibly the best known beaches are Terrigal, with its busy waterfront of shops and cafes, and Avoca, with its historic cinema and monthly market.
However if you want to avoid the crowds head to the revitalised Toukley or Canton Beach, Soldiers Beach, or for smaller waves and family friendly foreshores, places such as Ettalong are ideal picnic spots.
For even more tranquil waters, Tuggerah Lakes Estuary is one of the largest inland coastal estuary systems in Australia, with three interconnected lakes. Tuggerah Lake to the south is the main coastal lagoon with Budgewoi Lake and Lake Munmorah to the north.

The lakes and foreshores are ideal for water-skiing, canoeing, sailing, rowing and sailboarding while the foreshore offers extensive cycle, jogging or walking trails.
At the north of the region, The Entrance attracts a lot of visitors with its beach and lakes. Vera’s Water Garden is a magnet for kids while the pelican feeding, every day at 3.30pm, is a great photo opportunity. Stay for the weekend at somewhere such as diggers@the entrance to make the most of the area.
If the weather is not favourable, perhaps visit the Gosford Classic Car Museum. With more than 450 vehicles, is the largest car museum in the southern hemisphere. While you’re in the area, pop into Gosford RSL for a meal in either the cafe or the brasserie.
