An elderly woman who was savagely bashed earlier this year has died in hospital.

Anita Christanga, 78, was hospitalised on January 25 after her teenage neighbour allegedly broke into her home to steal from her.

She suffered significant injuries, including five broken ribs, cuts to her head and a broken jaw, but did not seek help. Instead, she went to her bank in Seven Hills to cancel her cards.

The extent of her shocking injuries prompted Blacktown police Superintendent Gary Merryweather to label the attack ‘horrendous’.

A NSW Police spokeswoman said Ms Christanga was found in a ‘semi-conscious state’ on Sunday, May 14 and taken to Westmead Hospital. It is believed she died later the same day.

The case has been referred to the NSW Coroner’s Court to determine whether her death was related to the injuries she sustained in the January assault.

Brendan Lee Burton, 18, was arrested on January 26 and charged with inflicting grievous bodily harm, and aggravated break and enter.

The teenager has been denied bail several times, mostly recently at the Supreme Court on May 17. He is due to appear before Penrith court on June 23.

Mr Burton could later face additional charges if the coroner rules Ms Christanga’s death was related to the assault.
