Blacktown City is under no illusion that the FFA Cup quarter final clash with the Western Sydney Wanderers will be tough.
However, striker Joey Gibbs said the side is brimming with confidence after their previous performances.
A win over the Central Coast Mariners and National Premier Leagues premiers APIA Leichhardt has Blacktown buzzing for the western Sydney derby.
“The Wanderers are a good team and they’ll be strong but it was a perfect preparation knocking off the Mariners,” he said.
“It fills us with confidence and it’s not blind confidence, it’s proven confidence so we’ll be going into the game knowing it’s possible.”
The Demons also defeated the Wellington Pheonix 2-1 in a pre-season friendly over the weekend, which will add to the side’s belief.
Gibbs is an experienced campaigner, having tallied 18 A-League games with Sydney FC, Newcastle Jets and the Western Sydney Wanderers with three goals at the top level.
While excited to be going up against his former club, Gibbs admitted it was a dream match up for Blacktown.
“There was a lot of talk amongst our lads that two teams we’d like to get in our FFA Cup run were the Mariners and Wanderers,” he said.
“With the Wanderers, it’s the Western Sydney Derby and that’s massive. A lot of the boys and friends and family are Wanderers fans but they’ll be supporting Blacktown because they’re friends of players.
“It’ll be an interesting game because I think there will be a lot of dual supporters of both teams.”
The Blacktown side will also be buoyed by Joey Gibbs, Mitch Mallia and Connor Evans being named in the NPL NSW team of the year.
With the match officially sold out, Gibbs said it will be an amazing experience.
“You couldn’t have asked for a better draw in terms of the atmosphere that it’s going to bring,” he said.
“Obviously the Wanderers have their fans and I was lucky enough to experience that in my season there, they’re great fans.
“I think for someone doesn’t know what’s going on will get into the theatre of it all.”
Blacktown City will play the Western Sydney Wanderers in the FFA Cup quarter final on Wednesday, September 20 at 7.30pm.
