Western Sydney Wanderers foundation coach Tony Popovic has sensationally quit the club on the eve of the A-League season to join Turkish club Karabukspor.

The Wanderers have announced former assistant Hayden Foxe as the interim head coach while the club searches for a new manager.

Popovic admitted it wasn’t great timing but was excited to take the opportunity.

“We've spent 14-15 weeks of pre-season preparing a team that can challenge for the title - which I'm sure they will," he said on Sunday.

"This has just come up last night and this morning, this is not something you can plan for. There's been a change of management overseas and I've been given the opportunity to take on that role."

Although an A-League title has remained elusive for Popovic, he guided the club to three grand finals and the 2014 Asian Champions League title during his tenure.

The Wanderers opens its A-League season against the Perth Glory at Spotless Stadium on Sunday at 6pm.
