Black cats are often considered unlucky, but not Elvira.

The Prospect kitten has been crowned the cutest in NSW after attracting 1410 votes in Petbarn’s Puppy and Kitten of the Year competition.

The poll, which attracted 68,300 votes spread across 5300 entrants, saw plenty of love for Elvira’s bath-time antics.

Her owner, Vinita Viswanathan, said it was nice to know so many people liked her cat.

The Western Sydney University design student owns two black cats and is planning a major work around changing the public opinion of black animals.

“Through my research I’ve found black cats have the lowest adoption rate and the highest euthanasia rate,” she said.

“I prefer to rescue them since they get the backlash of being associated with bad luck.”

Ms Viswanathan runs a Facebook and Instagram account for her cats, with their gothic-inspired names Morticia and Elvira.

She said the fans helped her choose the winning shot.

“Everyone liked the picture of Elvira sitting with a shark in a bathtub contemplating life,” she said.

The winning shot won Ms Viswanathan a $200 Petbarn voucher, which she plans to spend on supplies to donate to a local animal rescue organisation.
