Doonside students are learning life-saving skills thanks to Blacktown Rotary.

To celebrate the centenary of the Rotary Foundation, the Blacktown club raised $2600 this year to donate a defibrillator to Eagles RAPS.

Since 2003, the Doonside school has helped thousands of students finish high school and achieve trade certifications.

Blacktown City Rotary Club secretary David Bamford said the school was “a great local organisation that has achieved amazing results with young students”.

“Our Rotary Club has enjoyed a strong relationship with Eagles RAPS since 2004 whereby our club acknowledges students who have made significant achievements in their studies and their personal development,” he said.

“The Rotary Club of Blacktown City is proud to continue its relationship with Eagles RAPS.”

The life-saving device was supplied by the organisation Response for Life, which aims to provide defibrillators, awareness and heart screening to more Australians.

Sudden cardiac arrest (SCA) contributes to 33,000 deaths annually, including athletes and teenagers with no prior health conditions, according to the organisation.

Its website states: “High-quality CPR coupled with defibrillation is the only definitive treatment of SCA”.

Trainer Julia Zuza instructed students and teachers in CPR as well as how to operate the device.

The donation was part of the Blacktown club’s celebration of a centenary of the Rotary Foundation.

Since its inception at a 1917 Rotary convention in Atlanta, USA, the organisation has spent $3 billion globally on projects matching the mission of founder Arch Klumph: “for the purpose of doing good in the world”.
