Teenager charged for lighting fire at Vineyard

A teenage boy has been charged for lighting a fire in grassland at Vineyard after he was detained by members of the public.

Police said a member of the public observed a teenage boy crouched down and acting suspiciously on O’Connell Street about 11.30am yesterday.

Police will allege that a short time later the boy moved away and the witness noticed a fire in the grassland.

The witness attempted to detain the boy who tried to ride away on his bicycle.

The witness held onto the bike and as the boy walked away to a nearby home he was followed by another member of the public.

Police from Quakers Hill Local Area Command attended a short time later and were unable to extinguish the blaze until the arrival of fire fighters.

Officers attended the boy’s location where he was arrested and conveyed to Quakers Hill Police Station.

The 15-year-old was charged with cause or set fire to property of another person or Crown.

He was granted bail and is expected to appear at the Parramatta Children’s Court on November 27.
