What the gossip mags say

OH, HOW much can change in a week. Last week, Woman's Day declared on its cover, ''Nicole and Keith ADOPTING FROM HAITI''. Inside it said the couple were at ''an advanced stage of the process'' under the headline ''We're adopting!'' Awkward. As everyone seems to now know, the big news is - seemingly bigger than the best and worst frocks of the Golden Globes - Nicole Kidman and Keith Urban have a new baby girl, Faith Margaret, born in secrecy in Nashville by a surrogate mother. But Woman's Day weren't the only ones cursing deadlines: The Australian Women's Weekly edition with Kidman on the cover hit newsagents the day after the big announcement with not a peep about the new arrival. It was water under the bridge for Woman's Day, however, who this week could detail the surrogacy story and perhaps even relieve Kidman - who was battered last week for calling the surrogate mother a ''gestational carrier'' - putting ''Why our friend carried our baby'' as the teaser on the cover. While each spread covered the story with their own nuances, they all faith-fully carried the same quotes direct from the press release. In an industry criticised for ''close pals'' and ''inside sources'', it's reassuring at least to know the cut-and-paste keys are still accurate. The mags were less aligned on other titbits. Woman's Day teases readers with details of blow-up dolls, pole-dancing and naked acrobats planned for Prince William's bucks' night in South Africa, while Grazia puts the bash on another continent - at Whites gentlemen's club in London where Prince Charles had his sendoff into married life. Then there's the volatile relationship between Sandra Bullock and Scarlett Johansson, the latter newly separated from husband Ryan Reynolds. New Idea tells us Johansson and Bullock were ''kept apart the entire night'' at the Golden Globes, while Famous says they had dinner and ''hung out all night'' and Grazia explains the pair worked out their differences over vodka martinis - with lime. Some mags agree glamour couple Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie are keen to adopt a seventh kid, but NW implies the deed may have been done by themselves at the Golden Globes - telling evidence lying in the re-application of Ange's lipgloss. Clearly they haven't learnt the pitfalls of last week's adoption speculation. For their benefit, we hope as this goes to print there's not a little Jolie Pitt being brought into the world by surrogate mother. Or at least we find about it before deadline.
