The Finance Department did not create tables showing which families would be better or worse off as a result of the budget, a Senate Committee has been told.
The tables have been included in every budget since 2005.
Asked by Labor senator Penny Wong whether Finance had created the ''detailed family outcomes'' table missing from this year's budget, department head David Tune said it had not. He was unable to explain why the table was missing, saying the question would better be directed to the Treasury Department, which appears before the Senate next week.
An attempt to replicate the table by Australian National University academics shows low-income families and those on benefits would be 10 per cent worse off, while a single person earning three times the average wage would be only 0.9 per cent worse off.
Finance Minister Mathias Cormann told the Senate the government had ''made judgments'' on what information should be published and what was not necessary.
He pointed to a social services document accompanying the budget that displayed incomes by family types in 2016-17, without indicating whether those family types would be better or worse off.
