I’m ahead of the trend for the first time in my daggy life.
Needless to say it’s a happy accident, but I’ll maintain boasting rights regardless.
You see my bathroom is a wet room.
Yes, all bathrooms are wet, but mine is wetter than most — and it’s the look du jour!
A wet room is a bathroom with a shower but no shower screen or base.
Instead, the floor slopes to a central drain.
When we remodelled our bathroom eight years ago we couldn’t afford a shower screen — so we left it open ‘‘for the time being’’.
It turned out to be much easier to shower the kids without a screen getting in the way, so we left it that way.
And now wet rooms are the hot new trend in bathrooms.
A wet room can make a small bathroom appear big and a big bathroom look luxurious.
They need to look open and sleek, so wall hung toilets and basins are a good choice, as are recessed or cavity cabinets and flat paneled cupboards.
Water proofing is important, but the room does not need to be fully tiled.
Natural stone, treated concrete and timber and or Corian can be used.
The shower is a central element of the room, and because there are no space restrictions, outlets can be fixed in the ceiling to create a waterfall or multi directional shower heads fixed to a wall — or both.
