Brisbane Times most-read news site in Queensland

It’s been a massive month of news and events, and for the first time in Brisbane Times’ seven-year history, we can rightfully lay claim to being the most-read news site in Queensland.

In Nielsen figures released this morning for July, Brisbane Times claimed more page views than any other news site in the state.

And when compared to the opposition, Brisbane Times commanded 59 per cent of engagement time. In other words, of time spent on the two largest sites in Queensland, 59 per cent of it was spent with Brisbane Times.

What this proves is that while you can buy an audience via aggressive search engine marketing campaigns, boosted social media posts, and blatant short-term clickbait strategy – you can’t buy loyalty. And that’s where our sincere thanks to you, our readers, kicks in.

Average page durations for Brisbane Times are around a minute longer than the opposition, and average session durations are 13 minutes 57 seconds versus 4 minutes 46 seconds.

These figures are outstanding. As positive as they are, however, it is equally important to look at the business case. Clearly, quality independent journalism is a winning formula. We refuse to adopt a political agenda – we pride ourselves on an objective and balanced platform.

We are grateful that advertisers are also seeing that for many Queenslanders, Brisbane Times is a prime go-to point for local, national and international news.

And we are grateful that the people of Brisbane are supporting Fairfax-owned events such as City2South and Good Food Month.

In summary, July has been huge – and we confess there are some baggy eyes around the office:

·         More pageviews than any other site in Queensland for the first time (24,337,534, more than 200,000 ahead of the nearest rival, according to Nielsen);

·         Higher engagement time than any other site in Queensland;

·         More than 170,000 people attended the Fairfax-owned Night Noodle Markets;

·         More than 150 restaurants participated in Good Food Month;

·         The launch of the first Brisbane Times app for iPad;

·         Superior coverage of key Queensland events, not least extraordinary live coverage of the Gerard Baden-Clay murder trial and the very sad MH17 plane crash.
