Clive Palmer, formerly a member and significant financial supporter of the Queensland Liberal National Party, announces the formation of his own political party to contest the federal election. Initially registered as the United Australia Party, the name was changed to the Palmer United Party after the Australian Electoral Commission found the original name conflicted with another registered party.
September 2013
PUP's Jacqui Lambie and Glenn Lazarus win seats in the Senate with one left to be decided in Western Australia. Mr Palmer's bid for the lower house seat of Fairfax in Queensland remains too close too call.
October 2013
Mr Palmer wins the seat, beating the LNP candidate by 53 votes after a marathon recount.
Palmer United Party announce the formation of a Senate voting bloc with Australian Motoring Enthusiast Party Senator Ricky Muir.
April 2014
After the close Senate results in Western Australia are contested, a special election is held and PUP's Dio Wang wins one of the six Senate seats, taking their upper house representation to three.
July 2014
The PUP senators begin their terms.
November 2014
After a very public falling out between Tasmanian Senator Jacqui Lambie and leader Clive Palmer, Senator Lambie quits the Palmer United Party. She accuses Palmer of "hurtful and false personal attacks" while Palmer responds that Lambie simply craves media attention.
March 2015
Senator for Queensland Glenn Lazarus quits the party citing a different view of "teamwork" after PUP fired his wife and Palmer United Party staffer Tess. The party is left with one representative in the Senate.
