TWO men have died and a woman is fighting for her life after a two-car crash at Yarrawonga yesterday.
A gold sedan travelling south on Gilmore Street lost control about 3.40pm and hit a stationary maroon Ford sedan, which was parked near the intersection of South Road.
The Yarrawonga men, aged 46 and 65, in the gold sedan both died at the scene.
A female passenger, 45, in the Ford was flown to a Melbourne hospital with critical injuries.
A female passenger, in her early 20s, also received serious injuries. She was taken to Wangaratta hospital.
The male driver, 58, and another male passenger, 22, in the same car were uninjured.
All involved are from Yarra-wonga.
Police were last night trying to contact the victims’ families and would not release names.
Yarrawonga residents gathered near the scene as police talked to witnesses and another helicopter arrived.
The second helicopter was not needed.
One witness, who lives nearby and didn’t want to be named, said she saw the maroon Ford parked at a “weird angle” in South Road near the intersection for about five minutes before the collision.
“All of a sudden I heard a loud bang and there was debris everywhere,” she said.
The woman said she had seen the gold sedan around town before.
Another resident Ray Howard, who lives in South Road, said the speed limit for that section of road was 50km/h.
“It used to be 60km/h, but they dropped it to 50km/h and no one obeys it,” he said.
“There are cars that get 70-90km/h, just hooning around.
“It’s a worry because my grandchildren and other kids ride their bike along here and there’s no chance of these drivers stopping in time.”
The state’s road death toll stands at 133, compared to 127 last year.
Police are calling for witnesses to provide information to Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
