Minister for Roads Duncan Gay and Riverstone MP Kevin Conolly say a preferred route has been selected for a road connecting Garfield Road West with the Westminster Street Bridge at Schofields, providing a local traffic alternative to the Garfield Road level crossing.
The Denmark Link Road is proposed to run via Denmark Road, a new road and an extension of West Parade to the Westminster Street bridge.
The minister also announced traffic signals would be installed at the intersection of Westminster Street, Bridge Street and Railway Terrace to ensure safety and regulate the flow of traffic.
"These steps represent the implementation of the short-term actions identified in the roads strategy for the North West Growth Centre announced earlier this year," he said.
"The first action in that strategy is the opening of an underpass under the Richmond railway line as Stage 2 of the Schofields Road upgrade, providing a direct connection to Richmond Road.
"When this opens in early 2017, and much of the east-west traffic in the area switches to Schofields Road, the traffic volume on the Westminster Street bridge will be reduced, creating the opportunity for the Denmark Link Road to play a part in addressing congestion at Riverstone," Mr Conolly said.
Community information sessions about the preferred route for the link road will be held on Wednesday, December 2 at Riverstone Neighbourhood Centre and Saturday, December 5 at Marsden Park Public School.
People can have their say about the proposal by sending submissions to Roads and Maritime Services.
Submissions close Friday, December 18.
