There are plenty of design tips you can use to make a small space appear bigger. It all comes down to tricks to create more light and where to attract the eye.
- Use light colours. Dark colours absorb light whereas lighter colours reflect.
- Hang mirrors. By reflecting both artificial and natural light, spaces appear bigger and brighter.
- Use multi-purpose furniture. Your foot rest could also open up to accommodate throws. Side tables could also have shelves or drawers. Plus, less furniture = more space.
- Let the light move around the floor and create the illusion of space by using choosing furniture with exposed legs.
- Place your blinds and pelmets high above the top of the window and ensure your curtains can pull back past the edges. Choosing curtains same colour as the walls can also help.
- Vertical storage spaces draw eye up. Build bookcases to the ceiling or create a shelf above a window.
- Ensure large furniture pieces are not in walkways. Consider including a very thin console table between the wall and the back of the lounge to hold lamps, plants etc, instead of placing it at the sides of the lounge.
- Declutter. Too many focus points and too much stuff can take up space.
- Instead of one overhead light, try a couple of lamps.
Glass furniture can help light to move about the room.
