An elderly woman was seriously assaulted at her home in Sydney's west, although she was not treated until staff at a bank noticed her injuries and called triple zero the next day.
The 78-year-old Toongabbie woman sustained injuries to her face between Tuesday night and Wednesday morning.
Emergency services were not called until shortly before noon on Wednesday when the woman went to the bank at Seven Hills Plaza.
NSW Ambulance paramedics treated her at the scene before she was taken to Westmead Hospital.
She remains in a serious but stable condition as police investigate.
