Perth man Thomas Harman will be released from a Bali jail within days after he was sentenced to three and a half months' prison for stealing a pair of Gucci sunglasses.
The 31-year-old from Nedlands appeared relieved as he accepted his sentence and later grinned broadly as he emerged from Denpasar District Court, saying it had been "a bit of suspense".
"Once again I apologise to the people of Indonesia for the crime," he told reporters.
Harman may only spend another few days in prison, as he has already served most of his term, having been arrested on July 31.
He said he hopes to be going home to Perth within five days.
Harman walked away with the sunglasses, which were priced at $400, after trying them on at an IDP duty-free shop at Bali's international terminal on July 30.
His lawyer, Erwin Siregar, insisted the theft had been unintentional, putting it down to Harman's fear of flying.
Harman apologised to the shop after the theft was caught on CCTV and offered to pay double for the Gucci sunglasses.
However the case proceeded to court and the prosecutor demanded six months' jail saying Harman's theft had caused a loss to the shop and restlessness within the community.
Mr Siregar said the shop had already forgiven Harman, who had apologised.
He said Harman was very polite, had never previously been arrested and promised never to commit the crime again.
"In five days he will be home to Perth," Mr Siregar said. "Of course I am happy and my client is also happy."
