I’ve been taken to a very special place by Tennille Hogan, who manages the Blair Athol Estate property, near the historic village of Wollombi in the NSW Hunter Valley, on behalf her parents.
Kaine’s Pointe is special, not just because of the magnificent outlook it provides over Blair Athol, but also because Tennille has named it in memory of her brother, who died a couple of years ago due to complications associated with epilepsy.
And it’s easy to see why so many couples choose it as the site for their wedding. The vista is truly splendid and provides a memorable place to tie the knot that most people hope will last a lifetime.
I’m staying in the Dairy, which these days presents absolutely no clue of its humble origins. It is, to quote the website blurb, “a country chic retreat with outdoor heated spa, timber fireplace, commercial-style stainless-steel kitchen, designer bathroom and ideal outdoor entertaining space.” You’ll get no argument from me on any of that.
To sit on the deck, glass of complimentary local Stonehurst bubbles in hand, and contemplate grazing wallabies in the magnificent Wollombi Valley must rate as one of life’s great experiences.
The kitchen, with just so many designer appliances and all the equipment you could possibly need, would satisfy even the most demanding gourmet chef.
I’m sure I’ve stayed in more luxuriously appointed, more bucolically spectacular accommodation but I really can’t put a finger on when or where.
The Dairy is set up to comfortably accommodate two couples, the nearby Athol Cottage one couple and the Homestead about a dozen guests.
The latter features an inviting outdoor pool and a pavilion that’s very near completion and will seat a largish group of guests for lunch or dinner.
The charming village of Wollombi is only a 15-minute drive away — but do watch for skippies and wombats, particularly in the evenings — and has a number of fine restaurants, especially Panino Restaurant and Café which offers a range of delicious Italian-inspired fare.
But if you opt to stay in, there’s always the use of that gourmet kitchen. Or the estate offers a range of pre-ordered dining choices, including picnics and luncheons, gourmet hampers, bubbles and fondue, and a private bonfire package with canapés and sparkling wine.
